1. What does it cost to frame a picture?
Without seeing the actual piece in question, we can't accurately tell you.
In the same way that you wouldn't buy a custom-tailored suit without trying it on, it is very difficult to choose custom framing without bringing in the work to be framed. An oil painting is framed in a different way from a cross-stitch or watercolour or photo – different components are involved. And all the frames are different prices based on the size of the piece which we must accurately measure.
So please come in with your artwork for a free estimate and we will gladly work with you to find attractive, appropriate framing to suit your personal style and budget.
2. Why do I need custom framing?
Custom frames are necessary for framing items which are not a standard size. It allows you to bring your own personal style into your home because you will choose framing which reflects your own taste.
3. Should I choose framing to match my decor?
Not necessarily, it’s usually best to frame for the artwork itself. Frames shouldn't be chosen to match furniture or woodwork. The design should always compliment the image first, and the room second. It’s ok to keep wall colour ect. in mind when designing a frame, but try not to base your decisions totally upon your decor. When a frame is planned soley around the image, the result should be an accent to any room.
4. I have a very old poster that is a bit damaged and creased, what do you suggest?
Lamination really improves the look of aged posters. Many wrinkles and creases should smooth out improving the appearance, but if the colour is broken along the crease you will still see the mark. Very badly damaged pieces are laminated at the customers own risk, we may recommend framing instead.
5. I just can't seem to find the right frame, what other options do I have?
You can create your own frame design by stacking multiple frames together to look like one moulding. This gives you a much broader range of frame options and colour combinations. Stacking frames is a very customized and creative solution.
6. Do you frame mirrors?
Yes, we do frame mirrors in custom sizes. When choosing a frame for your mirror it is important to remember that mirrors are much heavier than regular glass, this means that larger mouldings or metal frames must be used in order to support the weight.
7. How & where should I hang my frame?
Artwork should never be hung in direct sunlight or ultraviolet lighting –even if the piece has UV protective glass.
Never hang valuable work in humid areas or near a direct heat source. i.e. washrooms and kitchens.
Always use 2 hooks when hanging larger pieces, this helps keep it straight and provides more stability. Plugs and screws should be used in plaster walls, or if possible find a stud.
Frames should be hung at eye level; usually about 5.5 feet from the floor, but this will change from room to room. Always consider whether the viewer will be sitting or standing.
When hanging a group of frames usually an odd number will look best.
To avoid unnecessary holes in the wall, cut out pieces of paper in the same sizes as the frames you want to hang (newspaper works well). Use masking tape to arrange the paper on the wall; this will help you decide on the appropriate layout.
Think about the proportions of furniture and walls, larger scale rooms require larger frames to keep a sense of balance.
8. Why is some matting cut with a wider border on the bottom?
Bottom weighted mat borders stem from a natural visual preference for a solid base. They are used to lift the visual weight on pieces that have darker colour, pattern, texture, titles, or larger shapes in the lower half of the art, or to give any piece a more classic look.
9. What is your turn around time?
1 ˝-2 weeks for the average custom order. Rush orders are usually possible but the frame selection is limited.
10. I don't want to spend a lot but I want to frame this piece, what are my options?
Images On Bank always offers a very competitive discounted price on regular profile metal frames, with 2” matting and regular glass. Lamination is another choice which is even more economical than metal frames.
We suggest that you bring in your piece for a free estimate so we can show you all the options available.
